Stay focused, Juniper told herself, forcing her thoughts away from Roma’s compelling presence. Don’t let him get in your head. She took a deep breath, letting the sweet scent of the garden fill her lungs, grounding her in the present moment.

As they approached the center of the park, the vibrant orange bouquets emerged… seeming to pulse with life, their petals almost luminescent in the filtered sunlight.

Daniel paused mid-step, and they stopped with him, drawn to his sudden stillness. He gestured to the lush foliage that thrived despite the winter chill, his voice carrying a quiet intensity. “These flowers… they’re flourishing against all odds.” His gaze swept from the blooms to Juniper, then to Sophia. “Just like our case. The system wants to choke them out, but they adapt. They find a way.”

His voice carried an undercurrent she couldn’t quite place… conviction layered with something that felt like old scars. Juniper felt her attention sharpen without permission, the same pull from the courtroom when he’d stood to defend her work.

Sophia nodded, her eyes brightening with understanding. “It’s remarkable,” she observed, “how the heat from below nurtures life up here. Makes you wonder what hidden strengths we might have.” She reached out, her fingertips grazing the delicate petals of a blossom, as if seeking to absorb some of its resilience.

Lost in thought, Juniper barely noticed the hurried businessman approaching until he brusquely shoved past her. The contact jolted her sideways - rude - and she stumbled, her heel catching on the uneven path.

Sophia’s hand was instantly on her left arm, steadying her. But it was the shift on her right that made her breath become suspended.

Daniel had turned, fast. His whole body angled toward the retreating businessman, shoulders squared, jaw set. Something fierce flashed in his eyes… protective, predatory even… a barely contained intensity she’d only glimpsed once before in the courtroom.

The man kept walking, oblivious.

“You okay?” Daniel’s voice was low, controlled, but that fire still simmered beneath the surface.

Juniper blinked, momentarily thrown by the transformation. This wasn’t the reserved colleague from their first meeting. This was… something else. Her pulse leapt, unsure if it answered to the stumble or the way his eyes kept her within his focus.

“Yeah,” she managed. “Just… wasn’t paying attention.”

Sophia’s grip on her arm tightened slightly. “Sometimes this place isn’t all it’s cracked up to be,” she said gently, her eyes flickering between Juniper and Daniel with something unreadable in her expression. “But we’ve got each other’s backs.”

The warmth of Sophia’s touch grounded her, even as Daniel’s protective stance sent something warm and uncomfortable curling through her chest. Why do I even notice how he’s standing right now?
