Ms. Rivera’s silence filled the courtroom like smoke, suffocating in its implications. Her composure, so admirable moments before, now seemed to work against her as the jury exchanged uncertain glances.

The moment crystallized - Juniper, Daniel, and Sophia reading the shift in the room like a book written in their own blood. The jury’s sympathy was transforming into doubt before their eyes, each second of silence another nail in their case’s coffin.

Something snapped inside Juniper. The sound of her chair hitting the floor echoed like a gunshot as she launched to her feet…

“Your Honor, he is badgering the witness!!”

The outburst shattered the courtroom’s tension like a hammer through glass. Gasps erupted from the gallery, the sound rippling through the chamber like a wave. Even Roma’s practiced smile faltered for a fraction of a second as the raw emotion in Juniper’s voice seemed to physically rock the room.

The ice had finally broken, but the waters underneath were dark and deep. In that fraction of a second before anyone spoke, Juniper caught Daniel’s eye - his slight head tilt carrying volumes of shared concern. Sophia’s pen had frozen mid-stroke, her usual fluid movements arrested by the gravity of what they were witnessing. The three of them exchanged a series of micro-expressions, an entire conversation compressed into heartbeats: they were losing the jury, losing their witness, losing everything they’d built. Someone had to act.

Without conscious thought, the words burst from her like a dam breaking… out into the courtroom before her mind knew what she was offering up: “Your Honor, Ms. Rivera is obviously shaken by these attacks from the Department of Justice,” she declared, her voice edged with concern. “Anyone under such relentless pressure would begin to withdraw… to protect themselves by closing off emotionally. She’s shutting down…”
