Daniel’s laughter rang out, landing like an inconveniently welcome gesture she hadn’t asked for. “You’re the most unfungible person I know.”

“Well, today’s the best day of my life,” Sophia declared, spreading her arms to encompass the glittering restaurant, the rare celestial display.

Juniper’s skeptical laugh caught in her throat as she shifted in her seat. Her heel tapped an unconscious rhythm against the chair leg as Sophia’s mouth twisted into something between a smile and a grimace: “No, really. I try not to lie to myself or it ends up coming true… I think that every day.”

The satellite drifted behind a cloud, momentarily dimming the otherworldly glow that had bathed them all evening. Juniper found herself leaning forward slightly, drawn into Sophia’s words despite herself.
