“That’s how it was when I first moved here too,” Daniel said, his voice carrying that quiet understanding that always seemed to ground her. “The city can feel overwhelming, especially during the holidays. Let me know if you need help getting your place decorated.”

She glanced at him, thrown off balance by this glimpse behind his pressed surfaces, her mind rivaling itself over what they kept contained. He was already looking back at his work, as if the moment of connection had been entirely casual, but something in the set of his shoulders told her otherwise.

“I believe in you,” he added without looking up, the words falling as naturally as the snow outside. “We’ll be ready.”
