As they continued along the path, Juniper noticed a woman ahead wearing an extravagant hat adorned with vibrant plumes that seemed to catch and refract the light. Who wears something like that? she thought, a fleeting pang of envy mixing with amusement. Still, it’s bold. Maybe I should be more daring sometimes.

Sophia followed her gaze and raised an eyebrow. “Quite the statement piece, isn’t it?”

Juniper laughed softly. “Definitely turning heads. Not sure I could pull that off.”

“I think you could,” Sophia said encouragingly. “You’ve got the confidence for it.”

Their gaze had drifted to the heat shimmering above the snow cyclone vents, watching the hypnotic pull of fresh water spiraling down into the layer beneath, when both heads snapped toward the street… a man entering the bullet station, his voice cutting through the air: “Storks not forks.”

They kept walking. Shared a look that said everything and nothing. Juniper’s breath hung crystalline before escaping in a small puff.

Sophia broke the moment, her voice carefully light. “You should check out where I park… they offer a credit since it helps the array.”

“You know what? I just might,” Juniper replied with a grin.

As they approached their office building, Juniper couldn’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension. The transition from the tranquil park to the bustling corporate environment was always jarring, but today, it felt particularly significant. A new challenge awaits, she thought, taking a breath to steady herself, her hand instinctively reaching for the locket at her neck.
