Steam curled from their coffee cups as Sophia watched Juniper maneuver the vehicle out of the cramped parking space, her movements precise despite her obvious irritation. The impatient honking from the vehicle waiting to claim their spot echoed off the glass and steel canyon of downtown buildings, but Juniper seemed determined to take her time, a slight smirk ghosting the window’s reflection.

“I think he wants this spot,” Sophia observed mildly, turning her head to catch Juniper’s profile. The morning light softened her friend’s features, transforming her usual professional demeanor into something more playful, almost mischievous.

For a moment, she looked like the girl Sophia had first met, before the weight of litigation and expectations had carved out those subtle stress lines around her eyes.

“Make ‘em wait,” Juniper replied with an exaggerated head nod, her ponytail swaying with the motion. The gesture was so utterly un-Juniper-like that Sophia couldn’t help but laugh, even as anxiety worn in her chest at the growing chorus of horns behind them.

Sophia watched as citizens rushed past on the sidewalks, their movements a choreographed chaos of purpose and determination. A woman in stilettos dodged a delivery cyclist while never looking up from her device, an intern power-walked through a crowd while juggling three breakfast sandwiches, a couple stood frozen in an embrace outside a café, oblivious to the flow of humanity around them.
