A framed photograph teetered precariously on the edge of the shelf before plummeting towards the ground. With lightning-quick reflexes, Daniel’s hand shot out, catching the frame just inches from the floor.

He straightened up slowly, the photograph held carefully in his hands. It was a picture of Juniper and her family at their annual retreat. In the image, Juniper’s face was split wide with a carefree grin, her arm slung around her laughing aunt’s shoulders.

Daniel studied the picture, a soft smile playing at the corners of his mouth. “You look happy there,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

Juniper swallowed hard, suddenly feeling exposed. “I was,” she managed, her voice catching slightly. “I am. Those trips are special to me.”

She found herself explaining about the annual family gatherings, the words spilling out of her in a rush. She told him about the cozy cabin nestled in the woods, the lazy afternoons spent floating on the lake, the game nights that often ended in tears of laughter.

Through it all, Daniel listened intently, his eyes never leaving her face. There was a gentleness to his expression that made Juniper’s heart ache in a way she couldn’t quite define.
