Then she felt it… a vibration rising up through her from the floor, machinery stirring in the depths below.
And just like that, the spell broke as the backup generator kicked in, the lights flickering on and casting a harsh glare across the room, the capacitors absorbing excessive currents from everywhere it seemed. Daniel stepped back, his hand falling away from her arm, and Juniper felt the loss of his touch like a physical ache.
“I think Emma and Marcus might be stuck in the elevator. Let’s go, come on,” Daniel said urgently, his voice cutting through the charged silence.
