Sophia gestured toward the cyclists above, clearly trying to shift the mood. “Your expertise as an examiner could break this case wide open,” she said, her voice filled with quiet conviction. “Just like them up there… finding the right path through all the complexity…”
From somewhere in the distance, a man’s voice cut through the ambient noise of the park. “Dissolution imminent!” The words rang out, theatrical and desperate. “Swap with the shop today! Swap with the…”
Both women’s heads turned toward the sound simultaneously. Through the violet-tinged foliage, they caught a glimpse of a figure in a garish, colorful outfit… some kind of advertisement.?. dancing wildly as he gesticulated at passersby who studiously ignored him. His movements were frantic, almost hypnotic in their absurdity.
A running group jogged past on their left, their laughter bubbling up as they caught sight of the spectacle. One of them pointed, still chuckling as they disappeared down the path.
Their eyes met. Held for a beat. Juniper’s shoulder hitched up slightly, her weight shifting from one foot to the other.
“Anyway,” Sophia continued, as if the interruption hadn’t happened, “the Juisys LLC precedent…”
Juniper’s mind flashed back to the Juisys LLC case. She’d been just a kid when the ruling came down, sitting in her father’s office after school, watching the news coverage on the small television in the corner.
She remembered the devastation on the faces of the affected families. The way their voices had been silenced, their hope extinguished by legal precedent and national security justifications. She’d felt something crack open inside her that day… some naive belief that the system worked, that justice was guaranteed.
That’s when I knew, she thought, her hand unconsciously finding her grandmother’s locket beneath her shirt. That’s when I knew I had to fight back.
It was the moment that had forged her resolve, that had set her on this path. The moment she’d decided she wouldn’t be powerless. Wouldn’t be silenced. Wouldn’t let them win.
Even if it meant fighting alone.
